Although Betty Crocker is a fictitious character, she was crowned the second-best-known woman in America in 1945. Her appearance in 1921 resulted from a competition to complete puzzles and win a pin cushion for a Gold metal flour media promotion. Crocker was a company director early on, and the brand was so popular it resulted in products and recipe books that continue to sell today.
