The first twigs are thin, supple, and green. They will bend into a complete circle but not break. They had a hopefulness that was delicate shooting from lilac and forsythia bushes intending to change only in whipping style. They beat us differently in the spring. The pain of a winter cold stood in contrast to these new green switches that lost their sting long after the whipping was over. These long twigs had a nervous meanness that led us to hope for the firm but the honest slap of a hairbrush or the steady stroke of a strap. Even today For me the spring is even now filled through with an ache of remembrance of switchings, and forsythia no longer holds cheer.
