Change is something I have referenced in other blogs, and it carries such a powerful presence that it requires its own article. It is one of the most exceptional parts of life. Change sadly does have the power to provoke fear too. In this article, we will look at how change affects voiceover artists. We will explore how voice actors need to deal with change to obtain the best results. Change in the voiceover industry occurs on a regular and consistent basis. This means it is vital that the voice talent are prepared to ride the waves of change in this fantastic industry.
What’s Changed in Voiceover?
The phrase ‘What changed’ creeps up from time to time in various aspects. In voiceover, I think the biggest change we ever saw in the modern day came in the form of the pandemic. This was an interesting development though as it affected everyone and everything, not just voiceover. But certainly, for voiceover, the pandemic ‘changed’ things. But That is not the only change we saw. Change comes in the form of innovative technology, the latest trends, new reading style and even clients going in new directions. All these things to some degree have an impact on us.
In the next two sections, I will discuss when change offers both a negative impact and a positive one, and how we can respond positively.
Exploring the Positive Impact of Change in Voiceover
Imagine you just got three new massive clients all at once – that is positive right? Well, the challenge that comes with that is managing your time and finding a decent work-life balance. On top of that, you still need to look after your existing clients. Have you ever seen the clip of the clown car? Where dozens of clowns all somehow fit in this tiny little automobile? Well, our life can feel like that sometimes. We can only squeeze so much in, and there is not an endless supply of time.
Navigating the Negative Impact of Change in Voiceover
To keep it related to the above I now want you to imagine you have lost one of your biggest clients – or even two! This can cause panic and concern but there is an opportunity discoverable with all this new time you have just gained. So, let us go over some top tips to deal with this situation:
One – Try not to let them leave entirely. Offering them a discount or a reduction in service is an effective way to keep them even if in a lesser capacity than what you are used to.
Two – Do your daily marketing tasks, if you want to learn more about these you can check that out here.
Three – Ever heard the phrase ‘Prevention is cheaper than the cure?’ Doing your daily marketing tasks along with continual acknowledgement and gratitude towards your clients is key to keeping them. Send them a card a small gift at Christmas, a card at thanksgiving and so on.
Conclusion for Voiceover Artists Dealing with Change
Though change can be both good and bad voice actors must be prepared for it. Most voiceover artists found great benefits during the pandemic. This was because the focus was on home studios. Production companies had no choice but to use home studios through the power of connectivity if they wanted to continue working. That said, some voice performers did not have home studios set up. At that moment, the talent had to decide to hold on and lose out on work or invest in technology. The opportunity to work from home was evidently an attractive one.
