Community Psychiatric Centers was founded in 1968 in California in an effort to link neighborhood private hospitals. By 1975 CPC operated 10 hospitals and was one of the largest privately-owned chains of psychiatric hospitals in both the U.S. and Britain. In 1985 laws were changed in several states halting the expansion of hospitals nationwide. In 1992 CDC rebranded from a company of psychiatric hospitals into an integrated behavioral health system and became the second largest provider of dialysis in the U.S. This change helped them get out of the dwindling psychiatric market and into the development and operation of long-term critical care paired with CPC Hospitals.
