Nellie Cashman came to Boston with her mother, sister, and thousands of other Irish Catholic immigrants around 1860. After moving to San Francisco a few years later, she and her mother developed a fever for mining and traveled to the silver camps of Nevada. They opened the Miner’s Boarding House in Pioche to support her mining ventures, which would become a recurring pattern over her lifetime. Next, she headed to the remote Cassiar gold mines in Northern British Columbia with 200 male Nevada prospectors. Years later she told reporters that she enjoyed alternating between running the house and mining until the summer of 1973. That fall she moved to Victoria to spend the winter in the milder weather of the coast.
