William Hogarth was an artist and engraver who lived from 1697 until 1764. He specialized in satire, which would be referred to these days as, heavy-handed moralizing on the wages of sin. His engraved plates were actually pirated because they were so popular. This led Parliament to protect the copyright by enacting the Hogarth Act of 1735. The plates provide us with a unique view of life in Georgian London. His eight plate series, The Harlot’s Progress, traces the life of a country lass from her arrival in London to her decline as an imprisoned whore. In The Rake’s Progress, the debauched protagonist is entertained in a Russell Street tavern by a bevy of prostitutes. One of the laidies strokes his chest while the other relieves him of his pocket watch.
