In the 1840’s there were no rules to the game that would become baseball. There were no set numbers for balls, strikes, innings, outs or even which way to run the bases. One man, Alexander Cartwright, understood that for this new game to prosper, it needed definition. He created it. Ninety feet between bases, four balls, three strikes, nine innings, three outs, and how to run the bases to score. Cartwright’s vision remains the frame work to our national past time today.
