John F. Kennedy joined the Naval Reserves in 1941 after graduating from Harvard University. He volunteered for PT (patrol, torpedo) boats during World War II and commanded a series of them in the Pacific theater. When his PT-109 was cut in half by a speeding Japanese destroyer he was thrown down into the cockpit and injured his back. Because he was a champion swimmer during his Harvard years, he was able to pull his crew to the safety of the wreck until the next day. They swam to two different islands before they finally found shelter and food. Then John and a friend set out for another swim to a nearby island with friendly natives. He cut a message into a coconut shell and they met with the New Zealand forces to be united with U.S. forces. After some recovery time, he commanded another PT that rescued 50 Marines being attacked by Japanese forces. By 1944 he was promoted to Lieutenant however, his injuries from the first crash sent him stateside for good. John F. Kennedy received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism and the Purple Heart.
