In 1958 the U.S. Manned Space Program began and one of the original Mercury astronauts was John Glenn. He was a national hero when he piloted the “Friendship 7” spacecraft around the Earth three times in less than five hours in 1962. The excitement of that accomplishment made Glenn anxious to do it again, but President Kennedy pulled his flight status. He did not want to take the chance that a figure so adored may not return from a future flight.
