Novels are popular source materials for Hollywood producers, and John Irving has a lot of experience in that arena. Four out of ten novels he wrote went on to become movies. A dark comedy directed by George Roy Hill and starring Robin Williams, The World According to Garp in 1978, in which he also had a small role as a wrestling referee. Hotel New Hampshire, a story of family innkeepers, came to the screen two years later. A Prayer for Owen Meany inspired the film, Simon Birch, in 1998, and the next year Cider House Rules dominated the box office. Although not yet made into a movie, his book My Move Business was published in 1999. This novel chronicled his experience of 57 years in the film industry.
