Shortly after 10 pm on the 14th of April, 1865, John Wilkes Booth crept quietly through Washington D.C. Ford’s Theater. Since the Civil War began there had been very little time to rest and enjoy entertainment, and President Abraham Lincoln was there to take advantage of the opportunity. Wilkes entered the unguarded presidential box and fired one shot at close range, killing the revered leader. The nation mourned the loss of a remarkable leader who had united the two halves of a divided country. Lincoln’s law partner William Herndon watched and joined in the grieving of a fallen leader. They had been partners for seventeen years and Herndon realized the public wanted to know more about his respected friend. He dove in and searched for facts, not fiction or fables so he could give the people a more human view of their hero.
