Here we describe a picture of four sisters sitting contently in the twilight and knitting beside a crackling fire with snow falling quietly outside. The old room was comfortable with faded carpet and plain furniture. Books showed from every nook, one or two comforting pictures on the wall, and Christmas roses near the windows. The pleasant atmosphere was peaceful and content. Colt-like Jo is fifteen, tall and thin with long limbs she never knew what to do with. Her sharp eyes appeared to see everything and displayed fierceness, humor, and thoughtfulness. Sharp grey eyes, a comical nose, and her one beauty, her long thick hair, were gathered into a net. Jo’s round shoulders, large feet, and hands, flyaway clothing revealed a girl rapidly shooting up to a woman she wasn’t ready to acknowledge..
