Long John Silver is the main antagonist in the adventure novel Treasure Island by Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson. This coming-of-age story is famous for its characters, action, and swash-buckling atmosphere. In 1881 it was serialized in a children’s magazine with the titles Mutiny of the Hispaniola and Treasure Island, then became a book in 1883. The story is one of the most dramatized and adapted to all types of media because of the complex and colorful characters and the depictions of pirates. Treasure maps with an X, tropical islands, and peg-legged sailors with parrots are just a few of the images that continue to appear in popular culture today.
