Louisa May Alcott was the second of four daughters born to Amos Bronson Alcott and Abigail May. Her father was a renowned educator and transcendentalist philosopher and her mother was a descendant of a prominent Boston family. Alcott wrote novels and stories for adults and was a pioneer of realistic fiction for children. One of her most celebrated novels was a group of eight books in the series, Little Women. Her tales were somewhat autobiographical and praised for their entertaining and perceptive accounts of childhood. Her characters were lively, warm, thinking, multi-dimensional individuals. Alcott was a very popular children’s author in her time, and her works titled Little Women and Little Men have been enjoyed worldwide in numerous foreign languages.
