As the daughter of a corset model and a boxer, Mae West ventured into vaudeville at age fourteen. In 1926 the thirty-three-year-olds icon wrote, directed, and produced “Sex,” a bawdy Broadway show that got her tossed in jail for obscenity. After taking the breath out of Broadway with “Diamond Lil,” she moved to Hollywood and signed a contract with Paramount in 1932. Mae’s ground-breaking and risque comedies blew the doors off the regimented roles for women. “She Done Him Wrong,” and “Night After Night,” were film versions of the hit play and blasted past all the existing box-office records. She is even credited for saving Paramount financially so they didn’t have to sell out to MGM.
