Life is a rollercoaster, isn’t it? It’s hardly predictable and each day comes with its own set of challenges and successes. Have you ever felt anxious about a situation only for it to turn out completely fine? Have you ever made plans for something in the future only for it to turn out completely different? My point here is that inconsistency and unpredictability are a natural part of life. In this article, we will look at the best habits for an on the road voice actor

On the Road Voice Actor

There is a long string of reasons why a voice actor might be on the road. Perhaps it is for a job opportunity, a conference, visiting family, or maybe just a nice getaway. You can read more about what equipment you should have for traveling by reading some of our other literature. But what about habits? Well, good discipline produces success regardless of where you are. Ultimately, this does not change, however, the situation may be totally different – so let us explore this in more detail.

Voice Actor’s Routine

Hypothetically, at home, you are happy to wake up at 7am and start your working day at 8am. A nice healthy breakfast and a spot of reading proceeded this start time along with a nice warm office with a cup of coffee awaiting you in your studio. However, you are now 8 hours out of sync with the time zone you live in. Now, having slept on a hard mattress and missed breakfast due to jet lag you find yourself a little bit out of sorts. So what is the solution?

  1. Ensure you are resting even if you are not sleeping
  2. Sleep as much as you can at night to reset your body clock
  3. Even if you are not hungry, try to eat
  4. Only eat healthy foods until you are back in sync
  5. Ensure you drink plenty of water (Not only to keep your vocal cords lubricated but to avoid dehydration)

Life on the Road

So the above might sound like common sense, right? Well to a degree this is correct, this is good practice where ever you go. So why am I telling you this? The simple answer is that performers are bad at the structure and I want to build a foundation for the next phase. This next bit might be hard, are you ready?

So the most challenging part of being on the road is the fact that those new opportunities, castings, auditions, and jobs might find themselves in the most challenging part of your day. Imagine you are 8 hours ahead of the time zone you are working in and your session starts at 4pm. Effectively you are going to feel pretty tired with a body clock which is trending a 00:00am physicality.

On the Road Voice Actor Summary

Consistency is key to success with traveling. It is so easy to get ill and in turn miss sessions, auditions, meetings, and other opportunities. On the same coin, it is easy to overdo it too. The most fundamental tip here is to stay consistent and persistent. Don’t give in to being tired but push through using the tips above to realign your body. It might not work initially but it requires persistence and in no time flat you will be smashing those auditions and booking those jobs whilst enjoying seeing the world in the process.
