As the third president of the U.S., a philosopher, lawyer, diplomat, and architect, Thomas Jefferson is one of our most beloved Founding Fathers. He also served as the first United States secretary of state, and the country’s second vice president under John Adams. As one of the main authors of the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson motivated and inspired American colonists and led by example for individual rights, democracy, and republicanism. Although he was never in battle, he swore to fight against all forms of tyranny and personified the standard of living free in America.
