In this article, we will be looking at a specific skill within the whacky world of Anime. Let’s first undergo a quick re-cap on what Anime is. Anime appears in the form of onscreen content and it is animated. The animation is similar to a cartoon however the drawing is heavier with sketching and the colors are generally more intense as opposed to friendly.

It differs from a cartoon because the target audience is typically a bit older. The content is also much more graphic. Anime will tell the ever-ongoing story of the battleground that hosts good vs evil. Blood, shouting, and death all exist within Anime. That said, comedy, character backstory, and a lot of nice content flow from Anime too.

Anime Performance

The common stereotypical association with anime vo is centered around the loud and prolonged screams the actors are required to do. However, there is much more to the performance style than just shouting. Imagine being punched, kicked, elbowed, blasted, or even thrown into a mountain. Anime characters find themselves in a vast variety of different scenarios and the ones I just listed are only a few of them. The characters generally host a supernatural persona. Some take the form of supervillains, others take the form of villains. The situations they can find themselves in really are endless.

Delivering Emotes in Anime

An emote is a sound reacting to a situation or circumstance. It could be getting punched in the gut, or it could be charging up for a massive attack. It could even be something as common as being out of breath. So how do you make a sound effect like this? Ultimately it starts in the core. Holding and developing one’s core strength is vitally important to deliver on this. Before you begin it is important to warm up and it is vital to know your own vocal capabilities. If you push further than your capability and hurt your voice, it is important to discuss this with the engineer and director. A damaged performer during a session might not be fit for a session tomorrow, so deal with the issue immediately to benefit everyone long term.

The next tip is just to practice. Practice different sounds which come from the core. Imagine what it is like to be kicked in the face. Even practice punching and kicking in your spare time so you know what sounds you make when you are the one on the attack. In anime, your character is probably attacking just as much as it is being attacked, which is great fun for emotes. Finally, a top tip for learning more about emotes is to actually watch anime. Check out a battle scene online and see what the actors are doing.
