Who was this man?
A rugby player, a Christian missionary, and a Scottish sprinter, he was born in Qing China and attended the University of Edinburgh. He participated in the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris where he won the 4000 meters race. He went back to China as a missionary teacher and remained there until his death in 1945 in a Japanese civilian internment camp. Eric Liddell was influenced by his religious convictions, Olympic training, and racing, and all of it is portrayed in the film Chariots of Fire.
